I would like take a deeper look at Walt in pop culture- specifically what I had written about for the corresponding blog post. I am interested in the folk aesthetic and how Whitman has been digested by society and reused/utilized (in relation to Guthrie). My focus will probably be music and how each generation shifts their sound and understanding of Whitman. How does music help bring a new perspective to Whitman? How effective is it as a medium?
I like how you compare Whitman's legacy in popular culture to that of folk musicians, especially since he pioneered a more democratic approach to poetry, which I agree overlaps with the role of music in our culture. Maybe he more closely resembles our expectations of 20th century musicians than 19th century poets.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea because it is relevant, in fact I'm using a similar idea for my project. I agree that part of Whitman's importance is the way in which he has continued to reappear in pop-culture over the last century. It's good that you have a specific genre that you are focusing on. There would not have been a Bob Dylan if it wasn't for Whitman, and folk music would have been crap. I solute you and your project!
ReplyDeleteGreat. Does this mean you'll curate/dj a playlist?
