revisiting an old post

I would like take a deeper look at Walt in pop culture- specifically what I had written about for the corresponding blog post. I am interested in the folk aesthetic and how Whitman has been digested by society and reused/utilized (in relation to Guthrie). My focus will probably be music and how each generation shifts their sound and understanding of Whitman. How does music help bring a new perspective to Whitman? How effective is it as a medium?

  1. I like how you compare Whitman's legacy in popular culture to that of folk musicians, especially since he pioneered a more democratic approach to poetry, which I agree overlaps with the role of music in our culture. Maybe he more closely resembles our expectations of 20th century musicians than 19th century poets.

  2. I like your idea because it is relevant, in fact I'm using a similar idea for my project. I agree that part of Whitman's importance is the way in which he has continued to reappear in pop-culture over the last century. It's good that you have a specific genre that you are focusing on. There would not have been a Bob Dylan if it wasn't for Whitman, and folk music would have been crap. I solute you and your project!

  3. Great. Does this mean you'll curate/dj a playlist?
